The 25 Best Givers?

Check out today's Barron's article "The 25 Best Givers."  The author evaluates some of the world's largest donors not by how much they give, but by their "impact."  The article is interesting and worth reading, but what are even more entertaining, are the comments following the article.  Some of the them question just how "impact' is actually measured.  This non-disclosure of methodology is also mentioned in another blog:  Tactical Philanthropy" sean@tacticalphilanthropy.com.

Fundraising in Times of Economic Uncertainty - Year 2

What will the next year bring?  An article in this week's Chronicle states that fundraisers continue to be pessimistic about fundraising in 2010.  I've spent the past 10 months working with clients and speaking in public forums about how to fundraise in a time of diminishing resources.  Some of my clients have experienced a decline in fundraising income, but most have held their own, particularly those that were able to make compelling arguments that they were helping people in need.

The question is:  will people be more willing to donate in 2010 because most economic indicators are showing that we're coming out of the recession? Or, will a philanthropy "malaise" set in?  Will those who cut back on their donations in 2008-09 because they were worried about the economy just stay where they are, and not go back to pre-recession levels?

I don't know the answer, although it's probably a little of both.  I'm going to find out what economists are saying and blog about it in the coming months. In the meantime, as I've counseled my clients and students:  best fundraising practices work in good times and bad.  Be donor-centric in your approach,. diversify your donor base, keep your eye on the bottom line and you should get through the next year, too.

Will fundraisers have it harder or easier in 2010?
